IOM3 map holdings – finding your way

30 Jan 2020

The Grantham National Materials and Mining Archive (NMMA) holds a large collection of geological maps and map series from around the world that are available for member viewing, study and loan. The collection, which has been built up over more than a century by exchanges with geological surveys and mines departments in countries globally, has been indexed by recording of individual map sheets and explanations in the geographical card catalogue or, since 1979, on the IMMAGE database. Some include little explored deposits in hard to access regions.

With one or two maps dating back as far as the early 19th century and with many covering areas around the globe from China to Congo and Chile, members have free access to a unique resource with experienced librarians to assist in searches.

If you would be interested in hearing more about our holdings please contact Frances Perry at or Linda Dawes to arrange a visit for viewing.
