Historical female engineers and scientists make debut on IOM3 heritage stairway

28 Nov 2019

Since the 1990s, the IOM3 Materials Information Services team has been working hard on gathering research into women who made their mark in materials and minerals, and who were part of the Institute’s long-standing history dating back 150 years.

IOM3 is pleased to feature eight inspiring females on the Heritage Stairway at the IOM3 London office. These are as follows:

  • Constance Tipper (1894-1995)
  • Dorothy Pile (1902-1993) (Pictured)
  • Monica Maurice (1908-1995)
  • Mary Lawson (1919–)
  • Marion McQuillan (1922-1998)
  • Jean Taylor (1924-1999)
  • Jane Plant (1945-2016)
  • Serena Best (Current IOM3 President)

The MIS team has gathered information from obituaries, journals, books, papers and archived content to establish when these females were members of the Institute, held a first position and participated or were active within the Institute. The research gained momentum in 2012 when the Women in Materials Group was first established and the group has since helped work on gathering profiles on each of these historical women and will be adding Wikipedia pages over the coming months.

Georgina Kermode who was the first female member of the Institute of Metals in 1916 and a metallurgist, as well as Marie Laura Violet Gayler, will be added to the Stairway in 2020 when IOM3 receives images.

Also added to the Stairway was a selection of portraits of each of our past Presidents since 2002 when IOM3 was first formed. These include:

  • Prof Serena Best (2019-2020)
  • Mr Martin Cox (2017-2018)
  • Dr Mike Hicks (2015-2016)
  • Prof Jon Binner (2013-2014)
  • Mr Jan Lewis (2011-2012)
  • Mr Barry Lye (2008-2010)
  • Dr Richard E Dolby (2006-2007)
  • Mr A Jeff Smith (2004-2005)
  • Prof Colin Humphreys (June 2002-2003)
