PIABC Level 2 Award in Timber and Panel Products and their Uses

This is a workbook based distance learning course with mentor and/or tutorial support, the course has evolved from the IWSc and WTS foundation courses. 

Best suited to those who are new to the industry, or wish to broaden their knowledge this course provides product knowledge and a wide understanding of the timber industry.

Course delivery

The work book provided is designed for distance learning with some input by a tutor or in work mentor. There are a number of tasks to complete throughout the book, some will require seeking advice or investigating within the work place.

Part 1 The Material: Timber and Panel Products


  1. Softwoods and hardwoods and where they come from
  2. Examples of the main species traded and their characteristics 
  3. Sizes, prices and grades
  4. Preservation and environmental considerations

Panel Products:

  1. Plywood, particleboard fibreboard and OSB- characteristics manufacture and grades
  2. Adhesives, properties and exposure classes
  3. Storage and handling

Part 2

Timber Use: Carcassing and joinery


  1. Types and applications
  2. Timbers and grades used
  3. Sizes, strength grading, classes and marks


  1. Applications and reasons for use
  2. Timbers and grades
  3. Mouldings, wood trim, flooring, profiled sections
  4. Components, windows, doors and stairs
  5. Fire doors and FR boards
  6. Product care


There will be a formal examination held twice a year which should be taken on completion of the work book. The exam will be based on the learning outcomes and assessment criteria set out in the course specification by the awarding body. The whole course represents a study time of 100 hours, of which 12 should be guided learning with others. This is a Award with a credit value of 10.
