Fundamentals of Materials Modelling & Simulation

This course is a layman’s introduction to materials and process modelling. It covers some of the key concepts in modelling and simulation of materials during processing, testing or service. It aims to provide learners with the basic knowledge required to make informed decisions on whether materials modelling can add tangible value to their business – be it manufacturing, consultancy service, or a materials research project – and what to expect (and not expect) from it. It will also help learners to devise a systematic approach to selecting the right methods and resources for the implementation of materials modelling in an R&D project.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is aimed at scientists, engineers, R&D managers, students and educators engaged in manufacturing and materials research, but without prior knowledge and experience in materials modelling.

What are the course requirements?

Learners should preferably have prior knowledge of physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, or a related field of study.

What is the course structure?

There is an information session on Monday 13 July at 14:00 which is FREE.  You can ask the Tutor any questions to make sure you are looking at the right course for you.

FREE Information Session : Monday 13 July 14:00

The main course will be presented in two 75-minute sessions over two days, each followed by 15 minutes of discussion. There will be no formal assessment, but active participation of learners in the discussions is expected

Day 1: Monday 17 August 14:00

  • What is modelling?
  • What is materials modelling and why is it used?
  • Elements of materials and process modelling

Day 2: Monday 24 August 14:00

  • Examples of materials modelling and simulation

What is the cost of the course?

The FREE session on Monday 13 July is designed to tell you more about the course, allow you to speak to the Tutor and ask as many questions as you like.

The main course cost is £300+vat for non-members, £250+vat for members.

I have known Hamid for many years and we did our PhDs at the same department in Cambridge University.  He is the “Guru” of modelling materials and materials processing. Hamid also has an exceptional ability to explain most sophisticated subjects using a layman’s terms - as we witnessed during his last week presentation. I am sure many students and researchers will benefit from his expertise and upcoming online courses.

Dr Amir Shirzadi,  (FIMMM, Chartered Engineer, Fellow of The Welding Institute)
